Southern Brave have secured a place in the knock-out stages of The Hundred after they defeated Oval Invincibles by six wickets in Monday night’s winner-takes-all match at the Ageas Bowl.
Middle-order batsmen Alex Davies and Colin de Grandhomme each posted scores of 40 not-out, while left-arm spinner Jake Lintott took a trio of wickets to help Brave edge their way past a 134 run target set by the Invincibles.
Lintott, who was signed to Southern Brave as a wildcard pick earlier this year, conceded just 14 runs off 20 deliveries and proved instrumental in halting Oval’s momentum after the London side came out swinging to go 46/0 off 16 deliveries.
Will Jacks was the orchestrator of that fast start, smashing four fours and three towering sixes to bring up a score of 39 runs from 13 balls, before being dismissed by George Garton, who struck twice in two deliveries, removing Jacks’ replacement Colin Ingram moments later.
A score of 44 not-out from Alex Blake helped push Oval’s run tally into three-figures, and they got off to a fast start again in the second innings, taking three quick wickets to dismiss Quinton de Kock, Paul Stirling and James Vince for 32 runs, putting the pressure back on the home side.
But it was Brave who came out victorious, with De Grandhomme and Davies arriving at the crease to grind out a gutsy victory for their side, which will see them qualify for a place in The Hundred Eliminator.
